Advanced numerical simulation and modeling for reactor safety – contributions from the CORTEX, McSAFER, and METIS projects

This paper gives an account of three projects funded by the European Union that heavily rely on numerical modeling and simulations nuclear reactors: CORTEX project (CORe monitoring Techniques EXperimental validation demonstration), McSAFER (High-Performance Advanced Methods Experimental Investigations for Safety Evaluation Generic Small Modular Reactors), METIS (MEthods Tools Innovations Seismic risk assessment). The focuses neutronic simulations, considers neutronic, thermal-hydraulic, thermo-mechanic whereas investigates seismic assessments. Although have different objectives, they present some common features in terms complementary approaches used each verification programs. main achievements are presented covering technical aspects respective projects, training, education, dissemination activities, as well utilization cross-fertilization. All lead to advancement reactor above areas, with development new simulation capabilities beyond state-of-the-art.
